It's Autumn- Quiltalong!!

Here is the inspiration for my quiltalong. poor little rag tag quilt looks like it has been loved and used for many years.
This quilt reminds me of a log cabin and it is some sort of variation. I couldn't find it in Barbara Brackman's book, but I liked that it was a bit unusual and it took me a little bit to figure out how it was constructed.
I'm calling ours  Mountain Trail. If you recall my hubby and I climbed South Sisters in August. Toward the summit it was all red rock, hence, the red "steps" is the trail to the top.

Aren't these fabrics fun? Feel free to use whatever fabric you want. I used reproduction prints with a solid red for the centers and two borders. Dig into your scraps because this won't be a big stash buster.

You'll need a variety of lights and darks cut into 1 1/4" strips. We will be using  lengths from 1 1/4" to 4 1/4".
For the red, a fat quarter or a little less will be plenty. We will wait to cut this red. I opted not to put in any other red strips in my quilt.

My quilt will finish (I'm hand sewing the binding down tonight) approx 23"x22'. My EQ drawing has a size of 18"x25". Either way we will make 20 blocks and you can decide on an arrangement.

Step one will be on Wednesday as it shouldn't take too much to get your fabric ready.

I'm excited for you to see my quilt! I love it and hope you will join in and make one too!!

  1. I've always been away when you've presented your previous quilt-alongs but the timing of this one is great for me. I'll be here on Wednesday, ready to start, Lori!

  2. Oh Lori - why do you have to do this to me? Always so many temptations. And...I remember last time, I didn't start, but loooooved all of the Pink Lemonades that I was seeing in blogland, and finally gave in! And I still haven't finished quilting it! Can't wait to see your little quilt.

I love the soft look of the old one. I wonder how I could achieve that...definitely WILL attempt that!

Can't thank you enough. You can't even imagine how much I look forward to this as I look at my others hanging around my house.

  15. Love that you are making this as a small quilt - it is so different, and would look cool in so many fabric combinations. I think I'll have to try it!

  16. I think this quilt would be perfect in autumn colors - thinking Jo Morton fabrics here - but I must quickly close my eyes and resist. I can't wait to see what others do with it (and will likely be even more tempted). I did finish "Pink Lemonade" but am s-t-i-l-l hand quilting "Cheddar Cheese and Crackers." It is my all-time favorite and I told myself to finish that before starting new.

  18. Yes! I'm going to do it! I might just go with 1 1/2" strips as well as I have lots of those already cut. We'll see. I'm on the road, so probably won't be able to start right away.

  21. Teasing us agian, are you?? Well, I just might jump on this one now that my BTCT has been put to rest. I wanted to let you know I read your last post, but was crying too much to comment. My heart goes out to all the families dealing with this horrible disease.

  23. Just beautiful. What you have here is a half-log cabin with chimneys and cornerstones. If I didn't have so many irons in the fire, I'd join you.

  27. What a fun quilt! I've got too many UFOs to start anything else, but I'd love to see what others come up with.

  28. Lori!! You are a bad influence, LOL. Ok the truth is I have a wee problem with starting too many things. I have resisted other sew alongs, but this time I just can't resist. I might fall behind, but I will keepo on sewing. Thanks for doing this lovely quilt.

  33. I thought it looked like one of the blocks in my Sylvia's Bridal Sampler. But it isn't quite the same with the four patch on the corner. That block is Chimneys & Corner stones with the 4-patch in the center.

  34. Hurray!! I've been waiting for ages for the next quiltalong. I will start grabbing all those scraps that I have been keeping for a little project just like this. Thanks Lori, I've always wanted to do more log cabin-style quilts and this is a VERY different pattern. Gabe in Oz
